Founded as a Military Lodge in 1754, we found our home in Dublin city in 1808, making us one of the oldest lodges in Dublin
Our lodge welcomes members from all walks of life and backgrounds. We believe that our diversity is our strength.
Since our Foundation, charity has been at the heart of our lodge’s activities. It remains an important focal point to this day.
Lodge 245 carries a proud lineage within Irish Freemasonry that dates back to the mid-18th century. Originally founded in 1754, the first Lodge warrant numbered 245 was issued to Freemasons serving in the 15th Regiment of Foot. At that time, many Freemasons within military regiments sought warrants from the Grand Lodge of Ireland, as Ireland permitted military Lodges to travel with their warrant. Lodge 245 was one such Lodge and helped to shape Masonic history far beyond Irish borders. Members of the original Lodge 245 not only served in the Seven Years’ War but also played a pivotal role in establishing Freemasonry in Quebec. As of 1801, the first Lodge 245 was recorded as closed.
In 1808, Grand Lodge reissued Warrant No. 245 to a group of Dublin Freemasons, and Lodge 245 has been operating ever since. Over the last two centuries, it has contributed significantly to the preservation and practice of various Masonic degrees, offering members an opportunity to explore a broad spectrum of Masonic traditions. Originally, The Lodge took the name “The Select Lodge of Concord” before changing to “Commercial Lodge” (after the Commercial buildings on Dame Street) in the mid 1800s and, later, merging with Corinthian Lodge 179 to form the “Corinthian Commercial Lodge” in the 1990s.
Today, Lodge 245 stands as one of the oldest lodges in Dublin, proudly representing a continuous legacy of brotherhood and masonic tradition. Our membership is made up of young professionals, new fathers, and retirees, who share a commitment to fostering fraternity and benevolence. We hope 245 is a supportive Lodge where every member is encouraged to engage fully with all aspects of the Fraternity. Our most enduring bond is the Lodge’s fraternal spirit which has survived since the mid-1700’s and which we are committed to retaining.
Many people assume that to become a Freemason, one must be invited to join. This is not correct. In fact, while members might encourage their friends to join, they do not typically recruit or invite candidates for membership.
In addition, despite common opinion, Freemasonry is not a political or religious organisation. In fact those two topics are not to be discussed at any Masonic meeting. Freemasonry enables men from different parts of society to meet together as equals, regardless of religious background, political leaning, class or any other social category. Members of the Freemasons therefore quickly make close friends and acquaintances from many different walks of life.
Lodge 245 meets on the second Tuesday of each month at the historic Freemasons’ Hall on Molesworth Street. Additionally, the Lodge continues its proud tradition of fundraising by organizing annual events like our barbecue to raise funds for charitable causes. Above all, Lodge 245 offers members the opportunity to engage with centuries of Masonic tradition, explore various degrees, and become part of a Fraternity that cherishes both its history and its future.
